How to tailor a resume to a job posting—without exaggerating

Match responsibilities honestly: reorder bullets, emphasize relevant wins, and align skills with what the posting actually asks for.

Tailoring is editing, not inventing

If you did not do it, do not claim it. The point is to surface the true overlap between your history and this role.

A 20-minute pass

  1. Highlight verbs and nouns in the posting that describe outcomes (scale, latency, revenue, reliability, compliance).
  2. In your experience section, move the closest matches to the top of each role.
  3. Add one line of context per company if recruiters will not recognize the brand (industry, customer type, size).

Skills section: signal, not noise

List tools you can discuss in an interview tomorrow. If you used something lightly, say “exposure to X” or group it under a honest umbrella.

Cover letters: optional but pointed

If you write one, answer why this team in two sentences tied to public information (product, blog, launch). Generic praise reads as spam.
